Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to avoid any large gatherings, and with the recent recommendations from the government and health officials, you may find  you have some spare time at home on your hands. We love our families but when stuck at home, the more usable space, the better. You might look at that pile of disorganized boxes in your basement and wish it was a second living room, or exercise space. Steps to Organize and Use Your Space Efficiently:

Step 1: Declutter

This is a hard step for many of us but the benefits are HUGE. Now is the perfect time to go into that basement, that closet, the garage, and look at things with a very clear purpose – does this item bring me joy?

You might be feeling like this task is way too huge and even though you’ve been at it for hours you feel like you got nothing done. Keep going! Take a before picture when you start, and every so often take another progress picture to compare. You will start to see all the work you’ve done is paying off.  Set a time limit when making decisions on each item. Marie Kondo suggests 3 minutes per item, and to do a few similar items at the same time so you can compare.

Step 2: Decide on an organization system

Now that you have a better idea of what items you have, and you have thought about what you use them for you can see that these items are best utilized if you first know where they are, and second you can easily access them. All of those Christmas decorations are in one place. Can they all fit in a large tub? A closet? Where will you put the winter coats?

If you have a family you will have many items for each season. Try organizing things into the 4 seasons so when a season ends you are going to the same place to put the winter boots/coats/sports equipment away and bring up the spring rain boots/gardening gloves and tools to start your garden. All those sentimental items deserve to be protected against getting lost or being affected by mold or mildew.

Step 3: Look for Leaks!

As the winter turns to spring, you might notice some leaks near the windows or cracks in the floor. Renovations and finishing your basement can protect your items from this damage, and more importantly protect your home and increase its value.
